The Story Behind My Favorite Watercolor Sets: Frazer Price Palette Box

Frazer Price Palette Box with Jackson’s Fine Art Watercolors

This is my most beautiful watercolor palette by far. I was immediately drawn to it when I saw it at on my last trip to London. I was in Europe in Summer 2023 on my Fund For Teachers grant research trip. I flew into London and traveled around Europe from there, and at the end of my trip travelled back to London to fly out the next day. I had to make my pilgrimage to Jackson’s Fine Art, which I do every time I am in London. Being able to go to the store in person is such a treat because you find all sorts of wonderful gems like this. I picked it up and when I went to check out, the attendant asked about my trip. I told him that it was wonderful, I just wished that I had been able to visit t the National Portrait Gallery which was closed for renovations when I was in London at the start of my trip.

One of the things first things I did during my research trip was a private tour of two London Galleries with Michael Ohajuru and his Image of the Black in London Tours. My research is around the image of black individuals in European art and he was able to show me some incredible examples on our tour. Michael told me about his exhibit in the National Portrait Gallery, in the Tudor section. It is of his John Blanke Project, surrounding a black trumpeter featured in art during the Tudor period. We would have gone to see it when we did the tours but the museum was closed at that time for renovations.

The attendant said that it had just opened back up. I was ecstatic to hear this. I did that tour with Michael at the beginning of my trip and was in Europe for a month. Little did I know that days before I was set to leave it opened back up! I cancelled whatever else I had planned for the rest of the day and went straight there (with my new watercolor palette in my bag!). I was so happy to be able to tell Michael that I got to see the exhibit and it is one of the highlights I shared with my class when I returned to school that Fall.
