The Story Behind My Favorite Watercolor Sets: Schmincke Horadam Aquarelle

24 full pan set from Jackson’s Fine Art in London

This set is from my favorite art store in the entire world (so far), Jackson’s Fine Art in London. I purchased this set online in 2017, but I have since been to their physical store in London multiple times. In fact, I no longer consider a trip to London complete if I don’t make my pilgrimage there. The last time I was in London, I stayed near Borough Market. I took the bus up to the store. It’s a rather long bus ride, as the store is not in London central, but the ride is something I always look forward to. As you leave the touristy areas, more and more everyday Londoners, going about their everyday business hop on and off. The streets change to more residential and give me a taste of the city that those who don’t venture out never see.

The store itself if upstairs and always has something special that catches my eye. If you ever care to visit a lovely art supply in the city, go to Jackson’s. Tell them Now Seeking Travel sent you!

I really appreciate the craftsmanship and quality of Schmincke watercolors. The process that they use to pour the liquid into the pans is meticulous, giving time for it to settle and refill over multiple cycles, creating highly concentrated watercolors. Also, their tube paint formulation is the same as their pan formulation, making mixing and matching that much more consistent. I adore the buttery consistency of the paints, party due to their use of high quality Kordofan Gum Arabic from the region south of the Sahara, which they test by the batch to ensure consistent quality, as different vintages of it vary.

I find myself reaching for this set often and have been using it for a fall collection of mini paintings (as you can see by the burgundy/orange/red mixes I have in the lower pans). Also, this palette is completely dry. The sheen is absolutely gorgeous. Love.
